The Scarlet Ibis

TOPIC ONE

James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis” centres around the experience of two siblings, one with a severe physical handicap.  In this short journal, write about an experience you have had with someone with a disability, be it physical, mental or both.  Explore your feelings; write about a specific incident where you made contact with someone with a disability.

TOPIC TWO

James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis” is recognized for its powerful imagery and symbolism.  Visual details, colour, references to the seasons and a host of other images adds structure and depth to the story.

In this discussion blog, examine the symbolism of the Ibis itself.  What is it and how might it symbolize something outside of itself?  Are there other powerful images or symbols in this story?
